Through its exhibitions, collections, stewardship, and interpretative programs, the Bates College Museum of Art presents a world of ideas, enhancing the vitality of the intellectual and cultural life of Bates College and the communities beyond campus. Its dynamic international exhibition program brings some of the most compelling historic and contemporary art to the region. The permanent collection holds more than 5,000 objects. Most noteworthy is the Marsden Hartley Memorial Collection and Archive, which includes more than 100 drawings by this Lewiston native. Other strengths of this scholarly collection include modern and contemporary drawings, prints, and photographs; contemporary Chinese art; pre-Columbian and African objects; and works by artists of regional, national, or international significance with connections to Maine.
