Sculpture Gardens

  • Ogunquit Museum of American Art 543 Shore Road Ogunquit, ME, 03907 United States (map)

Situated on a plateau set high above the rugged rockbound coast, with hills on the north and south sides, the OMAA's unique three-acre landscape is the ideal place to interact with nature and enjoy the creative arts of sculpture and garden design.

Starting in 1996, landscape designers Carol Woodman and John Prendergast have been cultivating ten garden spaces around the museum building that take advantage of the natural features. They have introduced plants, shrubs, and trees native to Southern Maine, along with imports and an array of colorful perennials and annuals; their selections guided by the conditions created by sun, deep shade, or the effects of the sea.

Most of the gardens incorporate examples of sculpture from the museum’s permanent collecting, adding dramatic focal points.

Funded by many generous friends of the museum, the gardens and works of art collectively create a strong sense of place, now central to the museum’s identity as the most iconic coastal Maine art Museum.
